American Oystercatcher
Last updated 3/17/96
An uncommon to rare permanent resident on the UTC coast. Gull sized its most distinguishing feature is its large bright red/orange bill. The bill seen on end is very thin and is used to pry open oysters and other bivalves.
During some times of the year it can become common, I have seen a flock off over 200 birds.
Look for American Oystercatcher at Bolivar Flats Bird Sanctuary, Galveston Island State Park, and Rollover Pass
