Mottled Duck

(Anas fulvigula)

Last updated 3/2/96

The Mottled Duck has been considered to be a subspecies of the Mallard, but is currently listed as a separate species by the AOU. It is the most common breeding duck on the UTC.

The Mottled Duck is very similar to the female Mallard and American Black Duck. The American Black Duck is a very rare winter visitor. The Mottled Duck differs form the female Mallard by darker plumage and a greener speculum with a black border (the Mallard's has a white border). The feet are orange, and the bill is olive-yellowish, but is unmarked (female Mallard's is patched)

Mottled Duck should be found in Anahuac NWR, Attwater NWR, Brazoria NWR, San Bernard, and in the marsh behind the Bolivar Flats Bird Sanctuary
